James Edward Roberts was born March 26, 1949 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the late Charles Walter Roberts, Jr. and Martha Roberts. On September 19, 2018 "Punchy" as he was affectionately called, entered his eternal rest.
Punchy graduated in 1966 from Simon Gratz High School after which he joined the United States Air Force obtaining an honorable discharge. He continued his education at Philco Ford Technology, specializing in auto repair. Punchy's vision was to be an auto mechanic and to have his own business. In 1973 Roberts Auto Services was established. He mentored and trained men and boys in repairing automobiles. Charles Roberts, his father later joined his son's business and became office manager for many, many years.
Punchy met his High School sweetheart Delores (Lois) in 1965 and they were united in marriage in June 1972. Lois continued to work side by side with Punchy after her retirement from the telephone company in 2001.
At a young age Punchy was baptized at Bright Hope Baptist Church under the pastorate of Reverend William H. Gray Sr., where he attended Sunday school and served in the kitchen. He was instrumental in raising several young people in the community to be the great men and women that they are today, and they know who they are. By many he was also known as Pop, Jimmy, Mr. Punch and Rob. Some of Punchy's outstanding characteristics include: charitable, bighearted, unselfish, kind, extremely generous with his time, talent and gifts. Habitually he read and meditated on the Daily Word; sent acknowledgements no matter what the occasion, visited the sick, supported Thankful Baptist Church and many other churches. He was a God-fearing man. His favorite pastime was watching CNN. Christmas season was his favorite time of the year. He loved the comradery at his annual luncheon which was held at his shop.
