Albert affectionately known as Pee Wee and later as Al, was born and raised in the Strawberry Mansion section of Philadelphia to Dorothy and Albert Smith, Jr who proceeded him in death along with his sister Wandetta. Al was an amazing child who grew into an extraordinary young man. He was an exemplary product of the public-school system having proudly graduated from the renowned Saul Agricultural High School. He went on to earn his Bachelor of Science Degree from Temple University. After graduating from Temple, Al relocated to Washington, D.C. to become a Congressional Aide to the former Democratic Whip of the House of Representatives, the late Congressman William H. Gray, III.
Missing his college sweetheart, Al returned to Philadelphia to marry Linda Ivey in 1985. They enjoyed a storybook romance during their almost thirty-four years of marriage, which included philanthrophy, hosting lavish parties, back yard BBQ's trips to exotic locations and their annual vacations to Wildwood and Ocean City Maryland's beaches.
Immersed in the Philadelphia political scene, Al came back to his hometown to service constitutes in West Philadelphia. Al transitioned his people skills to become a Call Center Manager at Health Partners of Philadelphia until his retirement in 2016.
Al lead a blessed life and was raised in a family that worshiped the Lord showed love, solidarity and encouragement amongst each other. This loving family environment was the basis for his life of kindness, generosity and service to others. He was a mighty servant of God who first attended Sunday school at Cornerstone Baptist, which was his neighborhood church. Al later joined Ebenezer Baptist Church under the pastorage of Reverend Samuel L. Spear. He became an ordained Deacon in 1991 under Pastor Matthew C. Haskell. Al was always active within the church, participating in several ministries: Vice-chairman of the Deacon Board, Chairman of the Trustee Board, member of the Celestial and Sanctuary Choirs, Male Chorus and Spiritual Advisor to the Matron's Guild.
As Chairman of Ebenezer's Trustee Board, Al demonstrated a natural talent and sharp skill for managing the church's finances. He proudly supervised the acquisitions and sales of church properties, church properties, church renovation projects and profitable investments of church funds.
During his last few years with health challenges, Al was blessed to be treated by a team of compassionate doctors and nurses at the Pennsylvania Hospital. Al will be greatly missed and leaves behind his loving wife Linda, his cousin Connie who was more like a sister, his Uncle Archie Hannah, his aunt Edna Cole and a host of cousins, brother and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, Godchildren, church family and friends.
